Resetting your DSL/Cable connection

Solution One complaint I get all the time is of a clients internet connection being slow. One thing that you can do to try and resolve this is to 'Hard Reset' your internet connection.

If you have only one computer connected it's simple:

1. Turn off your computer
2. Pull the power cord out of the DSL/Cable modem (don't just turn off the switch if it has one)
3. Wait about 30 seconds then plug the power back into the DSL/Cable modem
4. Wait about 2 minutes, then power on your computer
5. Once your computer is completely started up check to see if you have internet access or if your internet connection seems faster
6. If it's not working as expected, contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider). There maybe a problem in the system that they are aware of and are working on.

If you have multiple computers connected through a router (sometimes called a firewall) do the following:

1. Turn off your router/firewall (whether by unplugging the power or flipping the switch)
2. Pull the power cord out of the DSL/Cable modem (don't just turn off the switch if it has one)
3. Wait about 30 seconds then plug the power back into the DSL/Cable modem
4. Wait about 2 minutes, then restore power to your router/firewall (either by hitting the switch or by plugging the power cord back in)
5. Wait about 1 minute then check to see if you have internet access or if your internet connection seems faster.
6. You may have to restart your computer and try accessing the internet afterwards.
7. If it's not working as expected, contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider). There maybe a problem in the system that they are aware of and are working on.
